Deceased Name: Cullen , Marie E.

ALBANY Marie E. Cullen, 59, of Albany, went home to God on Wednesday, February 25, 2009 after a brave and valiant fight with cancer. She was the daughter of the late William H. and Miriam T. Kerr, and was a lifelong resident of Albany. Marie left a lasting impression on everyone she touched. She was known for her kindness, faith and incredible sense of humor. Marie graduated from Vincentian Institute and received her medical training at St. Peter's School of Nursing. She worked her entire professional career in the service of others as a registered nurse, most recently for 19 years as the district nurse for Capital Region BOCES. Marie embodied the great instincts and skills of a nurse in her career and in her daily life. She served as a caretaker and medical adviser for family and friends, and touched the lives of thousands of patients, co-workers and students. Her office at Maywood School was a place of respite and healing, and she radiated comfort, peace and love to everyone in her presence. There was nothing more important in Marie's life than family. There were no roles she was more proud of than wife and mom. She loved unconditionally, and those of us who love her never wondered for even one moment how much she cared about us. Marie now watches over her husband, Tom, of 35 years, and her two sons, who will always be Tommy and Danny (Chrystal). The youngest of four, Marie had a close love and friendship with her big brothers Bill and Jim Kerr, and her loving sister and confidant Liz Bouchard. She shared so many of the great times in her life with her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Janet Kerr, Skip Bouchard, Jim and Kathy Cullen, Bill and Carol Cullen, Susan and Tom Seipel, and was predeceased by her "little brother" Johnny Cullen. As "Aunt Re-Re," she was so proud of Cheryl, Billy, Melinda, Duke, Brendan, Kelly, John, Jennifer and Mary Beth, whom she loved dearly. Marie made lifelong friendships at V.I. and St. Peter's. Decades after graduation, she still celebrated regularly with those wonderful women. They shared many laughs and a few tears over the years. She was always supportive to them, and they were loyal to her, comforting her throughout her fight. In her time with Capital Region BOCES, Marie formed friendships with many of her colleagues. She was always there to provide strength for them, and they showed an amazing outpouring of love and support in recent months, and throughout her 19 years with the organization. Marie was a woman of tremendous faith. Her love of God steered her through all the moments of her life. She was driven each day by her deep devotion to the Sacred Heart and the Holy Spirit, giving thanks and asking for guidance. She was a communicant of St. Margaret Mary's Church, a community she felt was an extension of her family. Marie's family is thankful for the gracious and loving care given by St. Peter's Hospital and Visiting Nurses of Albany, as well as Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Those wishing to make donations in Marie's name are encouraged to do so to St. Margaret Mary's Church, or to Beth Israel Deaconess for cancer research. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday morning at 9:00 in St. Margaret Mary's Church, Homestead St., Albany. Calling hours will also be held in the church on Sunday from 4-8 p.m. All are invited to these celebrations of Marie's life. Interment will be held in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands
