Floyd was born in New Hampton, Iowa, on March 8, 1924. He graduated from New Hampton High School and worked in his father's bakery and the print shop in New Hampton prior to enlisting in the Navy during World War II. He married Mary Jane Schlindwein of New Hampton on April 29, 1944 just prior to shipping out. During the war, Floyd contracted meningitis and recuperated in Couer D'Alene, Idaho, prior to returning to New Hampton with his wife and young son.
In the following years, Floyd worked as a Linotype operator in New Hampton, Sheldon, Iowa, and Fort Dodge, Iowa. In 1953 he moved his wife and two children to Iowa City, Iowa where he earned bachelor degree in Business Administration with a minor in Journalism in three years while working as a Linotype operator for the University of Iowa.
After graduating, Floyd went to work for Mergenthaler Linotype and moved to Evanston, Ill., for nine months of training and then was assigned the Kansas and Missouri territory as a Linotype salesman. He moved his family to Shawnee, Kan. (suburban Kansas City), in 1957, then to Pontiac, Mich., in 1965, Arlington Heights, Ill., in 1968, and finally back to the Kansas City area to Overland Park, Kan., in 1970. He went to work for CompuGraphic in 1971.
Floyd grew up in a family of outdoorsmen and loved fishing all his life. He was an avid solitare player, loved putting puzzles together, and at one time was a regular bridge player.
He was survived by his wife; five children: Floyd David "Dave" Fliger (wife Nicha and their children Pat and David), Jane M (husband Lawrence D. and their daughter Sarah), Thomas Edward "Tom" Fliger, Kathleen Ann "Kay" Fliger and Carolyn Beth Fliger; parents Louis Fliger, Sr. and Nellie Nissen Fliger; brothers Russell, Alfred, Manley, Herb, Roger; and sister Jeananne Fliger Johnson (Marland).
He was preceeded in death by daughters Mary Jane Fliger and Barbara Anne Fliger; sister Joan Fliger and brother Louis Fliger, Jr.
