Former Van Buren Mayor Dies Sunday
Martin Succumbs After Year's illness

William Jesse Martin, 75 years old, former mayor of Van Buren and widely known in Democratic politics, died at a local hospital at 7 o'clock Sunday night after a year's illness. Mr. Martin came to Van Buren in 1887 from Tennessee, and entered politics. He was elected constable for two terms, served as alderman for 14 years, and for two terms was mayor of Van Buren. In later years he had been chairman of the Democratic central committee and engaged in the jewelry business. He was a member of the Van Buren Rotary Club and a trustee of the Wood Memorial Chistian church in Van Buren.

Surviving are, his wife, Mrs. Mollie Martin; two daughters, Miss Mary Caroline Martin of the home, 906 East Main Street (Van Buren), and Mrs. Vivian Lynn, Little Rock, Ark.; one son, William Jesse Martin, Jr., Oklahoma City, Okla.; three half brothers, I. Christian, Weatherford, Texas, Herbert Christian, Warren County, Tenn., and B. Christian, Huntsville, Texas; three half sisters, Mrs. Blanch Biles and Mrs. Oda Nicodemus, both of Tulsa, Okla., and Mrs. Robert Gilly, Warren County, Tenn.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Wood Memorial Christian church, with Rev. Sherman Kirkpatrick, pastor, officiating, assisted by Rev. W. B. Miller, Presbyterian pastor. Burial will be at Forest Park Cemetery under the direction of the Fentress-Miller Mortuary of Van Buren.
