He was murdered in his office on Sunday, August 3, 1952 by Ruby McCollum, shortly after he won the election for the Florida state senate.
Dr. Adams was married to Florrie Lee Adams, with whom he had a son (C. L. Adams, III, "Sonny") who was killed in an auto accident in 1952, just months prior to his father's murder. Dr. Adams was survived by his wife and daughter, Laverne.
