| Birth: | Mar. 8, 1943 London Greater London, England | | Death: | May 2, 2010 Kent Litchfield County Connecticut, USA | Actress. She had a long career on stage, television, and film. The child of a distinguished British theatrical family, she was raised within the show-business milieu and studied at the London School of Speech and Drama before making her professional stage debut in "A Midsummer Night's Dream". She made her silver screen bow with the 1963 Oscar-winning "Tom Jones"; Redgrave was to be twice nominated for the Academy Award, as best actress for the title role of 1966's "Georgy Girl" and as best supporting actress for 'Hanna' in the 1998 "Gods and Monsters", but lost both times, though she did receive a Golden Globe for the latter effort. She was likewise nominated for the Tony Award on two occasions, for a 1976 production of George Bernard Shaw's "Mrs. Warren's Profession" and for her one-woman tribute to Sir Michael, "Shakespeare For My Father" (1993), but, again, never garnered the prize. Ill with breast cancer since 2002, Redgrave continued her work on such shows as "Desparate Housewives" and "Law & Order: Criminal Intent", making her final appearance in "Ugly Betty" (2009). A naturalized American citizen, she was named Officer of the British Empire (OBE) in 2002.
