Obituary of Muriel Fern Mathison
Muriel Fern Mathison, 83, Princeton, MN, died Monday, April 26th, 2010 at the St. Cloud Hospital, St. Cloud, MN.
Muriel (Johnson) Mathison was the fifth of six children born to Chris and Carrie (Bartholomew) Johnson in Millersburg, MN on July 22, 1926.
She married Ralph Pream in 1944, moved to Ottertail, MN and became the mother of Charlene (1944) and Tom (1945). Muriel was widowed in 1948 at age 21 with two small children.
She married Bennie Mathison in Orrock, MN on September 10, 1949. They moved to rural Princeton where they farmed and welcomed sons Mike (1950) and Mark (1960).
Muriel worked as a farm wife and later at Fingerhut Manufacturing. She was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. When her children were older, she was a much loved aide at South Elementary School.
When Bennie died of a stroke, she moved to Princeton Apartments where she found dear friends and had the opportunity to become more involved in her community.
Muriel loved to travel, walk with friends, go to movies, concerts and loved live theatre. Her greatest joy was spending time with family and friends, especially her kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She's famous for her pies and banana bread.
After the death of her son, Mike, in Viet Nam, she became a valued member of the VFW and Legion Auxiliary and was honored as a Gold Star Mother and "Woman of the Year" in 2005.
Muriel was preceded in death by her husbands: Ralph and Bennie; parents; and siblings: Clifton Johnson, Clayton Johnson, Bill Johnson, Esther May and Annie Gay; and her son:
Muriel will be sadly missed by her daughter: Charlene Hodgkinson, Waukesha, WI; Tom and Jayne Pream, Ramsey, MN, Mark and Maria Mathison, Princeton, MN, eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many special friends.
