WALTER B. BARKHURST,
PIONEER RESIDENT OF CEDAR COUNTY, CALLED BY DEATH
Funeral services were held in the Rochester Methodist Church Friday afternoon, Dec. 2, at 1:30 o'clock for Walter B. Barkhurst of Cedar county, who passed away last week Wednesday in an Iowa City hospital. Rev. Otis Moore had charge of the service. Mrs. Wm. Sinkler and Mrs. Alvina Christensen sang Beautiful Isle Of Somewhere and Lead Kindly Light, with Mrs. Roger Purviance at the piano.
Walter B. Barkhurst, son of Thomas Barkhurst and Mary Ellen Doty Barkhurst, was born in Cedar County, near Rochester on October 15, 1874, and died at Mercy hospital in Iowa City, Wednesday, November 30, at 10:00 A.M., aged 64 years, 1 month and 15 days. His boyhood was spent near Rochester and he was educated in the schools of Cedar County. He was married January 12th, 1912, to Nellie McDermott, who preceded him in death four years ago. To this union was born one son Walter B. Barkhurst Jr. Mr. Barkhurst started a farming career in Cedar County when a young man and spent all of his life farming on Cedar County farms. He joined Golden Rule Lodge No. 24 of Masons when he was still a young man and was deeply interested in its work throughout the years. Mr. Barkhurst is survived by his son Walter Jr. and the son's wife, also an uncle, James Doty, of California; two brothers-in-law, Harry Madison and Thomas Nephew; also by nephews and nieces.
Mr. Barkhurst was a life-time resident of Rochester community, known and respected as a man of very fine character, a loving husband and father as well as a kind friend and worthy neighbor.
