Samuel died on September 1, 1885 in Peoria County, leaving Mary Ann with two children under the age of 10. At this time, I don't know whether Mary Ann remained in Elmwood Township or whether she moved west. However, I do now know, Thanks to Phil Bailey and Dale A. Bohrer, both descendants of the Bohrer family, that Mary Ann (Hammerbacker) Bohrer was married to Samuel's older brother, Joseph, in 1898, two years after Joseph was widowed. Joseph's first wife, Leannah "Ann" (__________) Stuckey, died in 1896. They had married in Peoria County on March 18, 1868.

They were very likely married out west and Joseph and Mary Ann are found residing in Erie, Neosho County, Kansas in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census records. This is Mary and Joseph at the time of the 1900 census in Erie Township Erie city, Neosho County, Kansas. She is listed as having had 7 children, only two of whom are still living;
