WINCHESTER-John T. Cook,82, of Winchester passed away on Monday, March 8, 2010 at his residence.
He was born in Winchester to Ernest L. and Esta Ola (Betts) Cook. He attended schools in Winchester.
During WWII, he joined the Navy and spent his 18th birthday on Okinawa, his mother attended his graduation and received his high school diploma. Upon returning home from the service,he went to work at Anchor Hocking Glass.
John had many different jobs and businesses in Winchester.
He then decided to enter college and with the help of the GI Bill, he graduated from Ball State College. While obtaining his undergraduate degree he worked at the Chevrolet plant in Muncie. John received his law degree from I.U. in Indianapolis where he also worked as a claims adjuster for USF&G Insurance.
Sometime during 1956, he was asked to take the position of City Attorney for Winchester by then Mayor Ralph West. John decided to return to Winchester to open his law practice and assume the duties of city attorney.This law career spans 50+years and has been vast and varied.
John's motto in his office is: "everyday we do something for free and the recipient of that is asked to pass it on".
John has been married to his wife, Marjorie (Dumford) Cook, for sixth-three years, and they have one son, John R. Cook of Farmland. He is also survived by his sister, Helen Maxine Kidwell of Winchester, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at Walker Funeral Home in Winchester. Burial will follow in the Fountain Park Cemetery.
