Obituary

One by one the old residents of Spirit Lake are laid to rest. The last to answer the roll-call of death is Salmon Snow, who had been failing for some time, but not until Wednesday morning of last week did he cause immediate alarm. The day before, he seemed unusually bright and cheerful, but on Wednesday morning he seem to fail perceptibly, and Thursday evening he quietly passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. A. Yarns.

Salmon Snow was born in Oneida Co., New York, June 26, 1811, and was therefore ninety-two years old. At the age of twelve he was left an orphan, his parents dying within three months of each other. Of the early instruction of his parents he always loved to speak with gratitude. After the death of his parents he made his home with relatives until his marriage, March 31, 1843, to Mary Luce. Eight children were given to this home, Five of whom are now living - Mrs. Carrie May Shafferman, of Grafton, West Virginia; Mrs. Susie H. Hill, of Indian Territory; Dr. Robert L., of Chicago; Steven L. and Mrs. Yarns, of this place. Mr. Snow with his family moved to Iowa City in 1853. Here he remained until after the war when he moved to southern Ohio. He came to Spirit Lake in 1880. His wife passed to her heavenly home three years ago.

The deceased was a man of strictest integrity, a very quiet, good citizen. The purity of his private life, the warmth of his family affection and his gentle, kindly ways marked him as a man of unusual strength, one who was honored and respected by all who knew him. At the age of fifteen he made a public profession of faith in Christ and for seventy-eight years has been true to the church of his choice.

The funeral service was held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Baptist church, and was conducted by his pastor, H. Travers Proctor.
