McCrillis served in the army during the Mexican War. When the Civil War broke out, he was appointed a colonel in the 3rd Illinois Cavalry under Eugene Asa Carr, and subsequently became the commanding officer of the unit. He served with distinction in the battles of Pea Ridge, Port Gibson, Champion Hill, Vicksburg, and Nashville. On September 4, 1864 he was breveted brigadier general "for gallant and meritorious conduct in the field during the rebellion." After the war, he resumed his civilian career as a lawyer.
