Jesse Mills Allen was six years of age when he, and his mother, sister, and brother, emigrated west to Illinois to join his father, John Allen. The trip was made around the Lakes on the steamer "Michigan," commanded by Capt. Blake. He attended the common schools, and for some time was a student in the Scammon School, on the West Side, Chicago. Afterward, he taught school for two years in Cook County.
J.M. Allen was elected Supervisor of Elk Grove in 1861, Chairman of the Board in 1863, and was elected Treasurer of Cook County for a term of two years in 1865.
In 1853, J. M. Allen married Veronica Dibb, a native of Yorkshire, England, who came to this Illinois when she was 18, along with her parents, John Dibb and Elizabeth Denton Dibb. Jesse Mills and his wife had six children; William Burton of Tacoma, Wash.; Mary Elizabeth (Mrs.Alexis Davis Sargent); Charles H., who died in Chehalis, WA. in 1885: Frances E.; Walter Glen, was one of the first graduates of the Chicago Manual Training School, and who died in 1889; and Veronica, of Tacoma, WA.
In 1895, J.M. Allen moved with his wife and two daughters to Tacoma, WA., where his son W.B. Allen was engaged in banking and the lumber business.
