She graduated from the former Ottumwa Heights College and then from Marycrest College with a degree in Elementary Education. Mrs. Berta retired after nearly 35 years of teaching. She had taught and molded young minds at Sacred Heart Grade School and then for the Davenport Community School District, First Grade at both Monroe and Harrison Elementary Schools.
Cathy was a very devout person of faith. She was a member Our Lady of Victory and was an Associate of the Congregation of the Humility of Mary. She was the president of the Volunteers for WVIK. Cathy had also been very active in the local Democratic Party. She was very proud of her Irish heritage.
She cherished time spent with her family, especially her loving granddaughters. She also enjoyed playing Bridge and was a big fan of chocolate. Her other hobbies were collecting antiques and traveling, particularly to Ireland.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Berta Freshman Scholarship of the Davenport and Bettendorf AAUW Branch, P.O. Box 621, Bettendorf, IA 52722.
