m. Chloe Jones, who was b. March 11, 1763 and d. March 10, 1840 while he was rector of Christ's Church, Troy, New York.

The Reverend David Butler served in the Connecticut Line of the American Army during the latter months of the Revolution.

On June 10, 1792, he was ordained "Deacon" by the Right Rev Samuel Seabury in Trinity Church, New Haven, Connecticut, who also ordained him "Priest" June 19, 1793, at Middletown, Connecticut.

David served as rector of churches in Litchfield, Reading, Danbury, and Ridgefield, all in Connecticut, and in 1805 was instituted as rector of the parishes of Troy and Lansingburg, New York retaining the Troy parish of St. Paul's Church until his death.

The Right Reverend George Washington Doanne, D.D., L.L.D., Bishop of New Jersey, gave the sermon at Dr Butler's funeral at St Paul's Church.
