Married Lambertje Roelofse Seubering, the daughter of Roeloff Luccassen Seubering in Holland.
They came to America in 1652 and in 1664 he was one of the founders of the Dutch village of Midwout, which is now Flatbush, New York. He was involved in many things. By trade he was a gunsmith and made armor. He was a judge, elder and churchmaster in the Dutch Reformed Church. Also a military leader and for 20 yers the Chief Magistrate of Midwout.
Building materials were shipped from Holland to build the first church, Dutch Reformed in 1654. That church was located at the corner of Flatbush Avenue and Church Lane.
His wife, Lambertje died before 1675 and Jans buried her in the church yard.
He then married a second time on 30 April 1679 to Swaentje Janse. She was a widow having been married to Cornelius DePotter who lived in Breuchlen (Brooklyn). They were only married 6 years when she died. He took a third wife in 1687, that being the widow of Jacob Hellakers, Tuentje Teunissen.
