British diplomat Sir Godfrey Digby Napier Haggard was born on 6 Feb 1884 in Wanstead, Redbridge, Essex, England, the son of Alfred Hinuber Haggard and his wife Alice Geraldine Schalch Haggard. He was the younger brother of Admiral Sir Vernon Harry Stuart Haggard, the Royal Navy officer who became Commander-in-chief of the America and West Indies Station. Godfrey was also the nephew of famed British novelist Sir Henry Rider Haggard. Godfrey married French Canadian/American Georgianna Marie Ruel on 3 May 1910 in Guatemala. They had four children, two sons and two daughters. His children included actor/writer/British Intelligence officer Stephen Hubert Avenel Haggard who died during WWII, as well as Joan Haggard Corley Smith, wife of British diplomat/environmentalist/ornithologist Gerard Thomas Corley Smith. His fourth child, artist/photographer/author Virginia Haggard, wrote "My Life With Chagall," which described her seven year romance with famed artist Marc Chagall.
Among his various diplomatic postings, Godfrey served as British consul general in New York from 1938 to 1944. He was also knighted for his service to Britain. My great-great-uncle Godfrey died in Apr 1969 at his home in Broomfield, Chelmsford, Essex, England.
Sources include the England & Wales Death Index, census records, passenger lists, numerous newspaper articles, online articles, and my family copy of the 1942 Généalogie de la Famille Goulet-Ruel. My thanks to John Latham for his photograph of Godfrey and Georgianna's headstone.
