Charley C. Arens, 87, of Brooklyn, IA, died Monday afternoon, January 28, 2002, while ice fishing on a farm pond northwest of Brooklyn.
Funeral services for Charley Arens were held at 10:30 AM, Friday, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Brooklyn. Rev. Richard Okumu, Pastor, officiated. The organist was Marilyn Kriegel and the soloist was Kevin Kriegel. Special selections were "How Great Thou Art", "Amazing Grace" and "On Eagle's Wings." Honorary Casket-bearers were Michelle Thomas, Richard Foels, Michael Foels, Wendy Foels, Andrea Goodrich, Jennifer Wilson, Christina Tuttle, Greg Thomas, and Sheryl Arp Casket-bearers were Jeremy Grier, Robert Foels, Curtis Grier, Mark Foels, Kendall Arp and Jeremy Goodrich Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, Brooklyn.
A Scripture service was held at 7:30 PM Thursday at Nevenhoven Funeral Home.
Charley C. Arens, son of Henry Arens and Louise Vols Arens, was born June 16, 1914, near Belle Plaine, Iowa.
Charley received his education in a rural school near Belle Plaine.
On February 5, 1938, he was married to Josephine Ruth Wilson at St. Michael's Catholic Church at Belle Plaine. They were the parents of five children, Richard, Mary Ann, Elsie, Alice and Irlene.
They farmed near Chelsea, then north of Hartwick, and later near Blairstown moving to their present farm near Brooklyn in 1950.
Charley was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Brooklyn and Poweshiek County Farm Bureau.
He enjoyed fishing and playing rolle bolle.
His parents, his infant son Richard, and one brother Julian preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Josephine; four daughters, Mary Ann Heishman and her husband, Phillip of Brooklyn, Elsie Foels and her husband James of Brooklyn; Alice Arens of Boone and Irlene Tuttle and her husband Rusty of Malcom; one brother Rene of Belle Plaine; two sisters, Irene, Mrs. Alfred Peska of Brooklyn and Evelyn, Mrs. Charles Fetter of Chelsea; eleven grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; and two step great grandchildren.
