| Birth: | Sep. 14, 1920 San Jose Santa Clara County California, USA | | Death: | Apr. 25, 2010 | Sports Magnate. From 1962 to 1985, he was proprietor of the San Francisco/Golden State Warriors. Born to Italian immigrants, he attended the University of Oregon where he studied advertising and served in the United States Navy during World War II. Upon his return home, he worked for his family's nursery business before joining the advertising department of the San Francisco Brewing Company in 1949. During the 1950s he became a successful TV and radio producer, purchasing a percentage of the San Francisco 49ers and baseball's Giants when they moved out West in 1958. In 1962, Mieuli assembled a group of investors to purchase the Philadelphia Warriors from Eddie Gottlieb, and became principal owner not long after. During his ownership, the franchise would win Western Conference titles in 1964 and 1967, and secure the NBA Championship Title in 1975. Among the star players who became a part of the team's history during his tenure include Wilt Chamberlain, Nate Thurmond and Rick Barry, as well as Robert Parish and Jamaal Wilkes, who launched their NBA careers with Golden State. Mieuli sold the team in 1985, due to the difficulty of keeping pace with the escalation of player's salaries. He died from natural causes. (bio by: C.S.)
