HIAWATHA --- Betty J. Buis, 80, Hiawatha, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at a Marysville nursing home.
Mrs. Buis had been an Avon representative many years ago and was manager of a Wonder Bread Thrift Store in Hiawatha from 1969 to 1988.
She was born April 7, 1922, in Pittsburg, the daughter of Albert and Villa Fears Lyon. She graduated from Benton High School in St. Joseph, Mo., in 1947 and lived most of her life in Hiawatha.
Mrs. Buis was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Hiawatha, where she had taught Sunday school and assisted with vacation bible school. She was a former Girl Scout leader in Hiawatha and did volunteer work as a receptionist at Hiawatha Community Hospital. She also was a member of the Hiawatha Country Club.
She married Dale E. Buis on April 30, 1940, in Savannah, Mo. He died Jan. 28, 1989. She also was preceded in death by an infant son, Robert Dale Buis.
Survivors include three daughters, Peggy Lee LaCounte, Hiawatha, Bonnie Dale Eubanks, Whiting, and Patricia Ann Morton, Marysville; a sister, Kate Nichols, Lincoln, Neb.; six grandchildren; and six great- grandchildren.
A Celebration of the Life of Betty Buis will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Hiawatha. Burial will be in Hiawatha Cemetery. Mrs. Buis will lie in state after 3 p.m. today at Casselman Meek Funeral Home in Hiawatha, where visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday.
Memorial contributions may be made to Cambridge Place of Marysville or to the American Parkinson's Disease Foundation and sent in care of the funeral home.
