Richard Grither, well-known citizen of Ste. Genevieve County died at Deaconess Hospital, St. Louis, Mo., Monday, February 28,1949 at the age of 64 years l month and l day. The departed man was born at Weingarten, Mo., January 27, 1885 a son of the late Robert and Veronica Naeger Grither. On September 20, 1910 he and Helen Mary Roth were married at Sacred Heart Church, Ozora and to this union nine children were born five surviving. Surviving members of the family are, his wife, five children, Olivia ( Mrs. Theodore Cissell) of St. Marys, Mo. Leona (Mrs, Ralph Rogers) St. Louis, Ernest Grither of St. Marys, Oscar Grither and Earl Grither of St. Louis. Nine grandchildren, two brothers and one sister, Raymond Grither of St. Marys, Rose (Mrs. Frank Wolk ) of Crystal City and William Grither of St. Marys also survive him. The remains rested in state at the Jerry Stanton Mortuary here until March 2 nd. at 9:00 a.m. when requiem services were held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Marys, Mo. Rev. Father James J. Mc Grath officiating. Burial took place in the parish cemetery there.
Mr. Grither was an employee of the Mississippi Lime Company of Missouri and was a member of Ste. Genevieve Lime Workers Local N. 883, C.I.O. He had many friends in this conunanity who are grieved to hear of his passing away. Sympathy is extended to his widow, children, brothers, and sister in the loss of one so dear to them.
Richard Grither was a hard working family man who worked the lime mines while farming his land. To make extra money for his family, it's been told, he did a little "Bootlegging" on the side. Actually he did a great deal of bootlegging.
His family was very close with his brothers and sisters living in the same area. He fished a great deal with his brothers and all his sons.
