HELEN E. THOMASON, 92
Memorial services for Helen E. Thomason, 92, Atlantic, were Wednesday, January 7, at the Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa, with burial in the Atlantic Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Roland Funeral Service. Mrs. Thomason died Sunday, January 4, 2004, at the Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa.
She was born July 25, 1911, in Montgomery County to J. Albin and Anna Wilhelmina (Hult) Maxell. She attended country school and graduated from Red Oak High School in 1928. She then attended Red Oak Junior College. She taught in Montgomery County rural schools and later attended Wayne State Teachers College where she received a two year teacher certificate. She then taught in Coburg and Stanton schools. She married Donald S. Thomason, February 3, 1948 in Mapleton, Oregon, where they lived for eight years. In Mapleton she taught in junior and senior high school. The couple later moved back to Iowa, living in Red Oak and Atlantic. She was baptized and confirmed in the Tabor Lutheran Church in Stanton, and later she became a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Swisshome, Oregon, the Methodist Church in Red Oak and at last was a member of the Methodist Church in Atlantic, Iowa. She enjoyed golfing; and she and her husband spent their winters in the South. She was a member of the Atlantic Golf and Country Club and enjoyed three holes-in-one at the Nishna Hills and Fountain of the sun in Arizona.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, John, Marion, and Clarence Maxell; a sister, Minnie Maxell; brother-in-law, Donald Beck and Lee Mewhirter and her husband Donald (1995).
Survivors include two sisters, Effie Mewhirter of Atlantic and Ruth Beck of Lawrence, Kansas; two sister-in-law, Lucille Maxell of Atlantic and Iona Maxell of Stanton; several nieces and nephews, John D. Maxell, Thomas L. Mewhirter and his wife Betty, Joe B. Mewhirter and his wife Barbara, Jack A. Mewhirter and his wife Donna, James R. Mewhirter and his wife Martha, Marvin D. Maxell and her husband, Kenneth, Barry Beck and his wife Mary, Jane Harris and her husband, Bo, Linda Paglto and her husband Lonn, Mark Beck and his wife Marla and Julie Nicolaisen and her husband Roger.
