Robert E. "Mac" McKibben, 86 of Valley City, ND died Saturday, April 10, 2010, in his home under the care of his daughter and Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Mac was born on April 9, 1923 in St. Cloud Minn., to Harry E. and Anna (Edstrom) McKibben. He attended school in St. Cloud and after graduation, Mac attended St. Olaf College, while there he was drafted to serve with the US Army from 1943 to 1945. Upon returning he received his BS Degree from St. Olaf in 1947 and his D.D.S. Degree in 1949 from the University of Minnesota. He married Eunice "Mike" Mikelson, from Clarkfield, Minn., a graduate of St. Olaf College, in 1948. Mac began his dental practice in Valley City, ND in 1949, was recalled to active duty during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953 and then returned to his practice of dentistry in Valley City.
He was a member of the following organizations: Our Saviors Lutheran Church. Elks Club, President of the Valley City Rotary Club, Bugler in the 40&8 Legion Drum and Bugle Corps, member of the Valley City School board, Minnesota Dental Association, North Dakota Dental Association, President of the Central District Dental Society, President of the North Dakota Dental Association, American Association of Orthodontics, Midwest Orthodontics Study Club, and International College of Dentists.
In 1965-1967 He returned to the University of Minnesota to receive a M.S.D Degree,specializing in Orthodontics and returned to practice in Valley City and Moorhead, Minn. In 1970 he moved to Moorhead Minn., where he continued his Orthodontic practice. He has continually maintained an active Minnesota Dental License. After retirement he continued to be actively involved in dentistry as Clinical Instructor at the Northwest Technical College, Moorhead, Department of Dental Hygiene and Assisting; served as a Clinical Consultant at Apple Tree Dental Clinic, served migrants and those on medical assistance in Hawley, MN and area nursing homes. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood carving and genealogy, with plenty of time to enjoy 11 grandchildren.
Mac is survived by his children, Dr. Robert B. McKibben, Valley City, ND; Pat (Gar Hansen) Valley City, ND; Sue (Gary) Warner, Grand Rapids, MN; Mary White, Bagley MN; and Carol Steinhoff ( Daren Brooks), Crookston, MN.; eleven grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces whom he was a father to. He was preceded in death by his wife and soul mate Eunice (Mike), and infant son, Stephan, and his two brothers, Don and Ted.
A private family service will be held at a later date with interment at Memory Gardens, Valley City, ND.
