Gram was born August 15, 1912 in Detroit as a first generation American and oldest daughter of Jedrzej (Andrew) and Tekla Mormul who immigrated to America through Ellis Island from Austria.
In 1919 her mother died of TB in the Eloise Sanitorium. This left her father with 5 young daughters with Mary being the oldest at 7 years old and Helen, being just an infant. Her father looked to Mary to take care of her 4 younger sisters. Mary graduated from River Rouge High School and went on to graduate from the Detroit Business College in 1931.
On August 5, 1939, she married Chalmer George Willis a the Guernsey County Courthouse in Cambridge, Ohio. She continued working as a secretary and bookkeeper at Peerless Cement in Detroit by hiding her marriage from her employer.
In September of 1940 Chalmer and Mary moved to a home in Garden City, Michigan where she would spend the next 65 years. There they raised four children; Laura Ellen b.1946, Barbara Mae b.1948, Chalmer "Buddy" b.1949 and Thomas b.1953.
