HOMER, LA - James Shelton Barber was born April 12, 1920 in Summerfield, LA to Elijah Barber and Willie Kooncie Goocher Barber. He graduated from Summerfield High School and attended LA Tech for 2 years. Mr. Barber was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and served in the European Theater. After leaving the army, he worked in the oilfield for thirty years, most of that offshore and retired from Dresser Atlas Oilfield Service Company. Mr. Barber was a longtime member of the Summerfield Baptist Church. He passed away on Thursday, July 29, 2010 in Shreveport following a sudden illness.
Mr. Barber is preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Mae Hilyer Barber; his parents; one brother, Walter Barber of Houston, TX; sisters, Mrs. Estelle Hightower of Shreveport, Mrs. Agnes Watson of Grandview, MO and Mrs. Inez Mills of Summerfield.
He is survived by two daughters, Sandra Barber Atwood and husband Ron of Homer, and Debbie Barber of Louisville, KY; one son, Randy Barber of West Monroe, LA; and one granddaughter, Mandy Bolling Smith and husband, John Robert of Ruston, LA.
Funeral services will be held in the Chapel of Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Homer on Monday, Aug. 2nd at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. R.B. Moore, officiating. Interment will follow at Tulip Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 5:00-7:00 p.m.
For friends considering memorials to Mr. Barber, his family suggests the Summerfield Baptist Church, the V.A. Medical Center or the Shriners Children's Hospital.
