Death: Apr. 11, 2010
Louisiana, USA

Curtis Mayfield was born on April 17, 1919, in the Jackson Parish area, to the union of John "Boss" and Luella Mayfield. He was the eldest and the last of their children to leave this earthly place. He was a member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, Hilly, LA, where he served as Deacon until his death. Early on April 11, 2010, Curtis heard the call of his Master saying, Servant well done, you've been faithful over a few things and I'll make you ruler over many; enter now into the joy of the Lord. Curtis was admired by many gospel music lovers and many baseball fans. He was the lead singer with Ruston's Silvertone Gospel Singers and the founder and leader of The Truetone Gospel Singers. Curtis was the catcher and manager of Ruston's Negro League baseball team called Ruston Black Sox. (His grandsons have formed a team also named the Ruston Black Sox). He worked at Grambling State University for 25 years and served in the US Navy before returning to Ruston to make a home for his family. He was preceded in death by his lovely wife, Bertha Oberlean Williams Mayfield, two sons, Gregory and Joey; three brothers, Tom, Lessel and Jack; two sisters, Mable and Chick. He leaves to cherish his daughters, Brenda M. Reliford and Michelle Mayfield of Ruston, LA; Cynthia Mayfield of Southaven, MS; Mattie M. (Earl) Lee and Mary Jewel both of Houston, TX and Dianne Mayfield of Harvey, IL; four sons, James Williams, Shreveport, LA; Bobby (DeAnne) Williams, Monroe, LA; Donald Mayfield and Lessel Mayfield, both of Ruston, LA; two brothers, George (Tina) Mayfield, Ruston, LA and Melvin Mayfield of Lake Providence, LA; four sisters, Melva (Eddie) Dade; Kathleen Mayfield, Lela Chaney and Lizzie Johnson, all of Ruston, LA and Louise Simmons of Long Beach California. Visitation for Mr. Mayfield will be Friday, from 2-5 at Our Christian Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Saturday at 11:00 am at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, Hilly, LA and burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Belue Family Clinic and the staff at North Louisiana Medical Center Skilled Nursing Unit for the care of our father.
