Born April 18, 1927, in Missouri Valley, Iowa, to Jewell and Dima Olsen Fountain, she married James H. Ashton on May 28, 1950, in Missouri Valley. He survives. She met her husband on a blind date, and it must have worked out; they were married almost 60 years.
Also surviving are one son, Jim (Jean) Ashton of Peoria; two daughters, Peggy (Tim) Buck of Champaign and Beth (Michael) Vrba of Portland, Maine; and 10 grandchildren, Christopher Ashton of St. Paul, Minn., Timothy Ashton and Stephanie Ashton, both of Peoria, Amanda (Derek) Gottlieb of Huntsville, Ala., Rachel Buck of Chicago, Katherine Buck, Sarah Buck and James Buck, all of Champaign, and Jackie Vrba and Ross Vrba, both of Portland, Maine.
She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, one sister, one infant daughter, Jennifer Ashton, and one great-grandson, Isaac Gottlieb.
Virginia worked as a nurse for the Peoria Health Department for several years, and later volunteered at the Peoria Red Cross and the Methodist Hospital Service League.
She was a member of PEO Chapter FB, and the Daughters of the American Revolution, and was a longtime member of several local bridge clubs.
She was a longtime member and very active in the First Baptist Church of Peoria.
After retirement, Virginia and Jim saw much of the country in their motor home. Later they spent many winters in Green Valley, Ariz.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 22, 2010, at the First Baptist Church of Peoria. The Rev. Thomas Bayes will officiate. A visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church. Entombment will be in the Chapel of Peace in Parkview Cemetery in Peoria. Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home in Peoria is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Peoria Childrens Home; First Baptist Church of Peoria; or Lutheran Hillside Village.
