From Alisa Boris 8/6/2009:
Hi Doug [Miller - a family history researcher], I am sorry I have not responded sooner. My parents and husband's parents are having health issues and I am the one who helps them out when they need to go places. So it always seems I am on the run. My Mother is the youngest daughter of Robert Fountain Thomas, who is the son of George Gustavous Adolphus Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Head. From what my family has said, George was orphaned during the Civil war. His original last name was Bentley and he was adopted by the Thomas family and at least one known brother named Roe [turns out this was Joseph "Joe" Summerlin Bentley]. Roe's last know place of residence was in GA or AL. George said he remembered seeing Atlanta, GA burn and he was born in Lone Oak, GA [Roanoke, Randolph County, Alabama] on Aug. 30, 1864. George died in Archer City, TX on Dec. 5, 1950 and married Mary Elizabeth [Head] on Dec. 3, 1885. George's birth father [William Joshua Bentley] fought on the side of the South and died "up North" from Measles as a Prisoner of War. The Gus Thomas you mentioned may have been his adopted father but I am not sure. I just knew of the name of the brother but I have not found records of him. Mary Elizabeth Head was also orphaned young and was raised by her uncle Tom Head. I do not know how or when her parents died or their names. I have found both George and Mary in the 1900 & 1910 Census and possibly in the 1920 census in Texas where I know they lived. I hope this helps and if you have anything else please let me know. My mother can not remember some of the information any more due to a stroke but some days she remembers better than others and she is the only surviving child of my grandparents. Please keep me informed if you do find anything. I would really appreciate it.
I have most of the rest of the family from George Gustavus Adolphus Thomas on down. I have not found Mary Eliz Head's family yet.
