He was the son of Elijah Banks Lewis & Bertha Ione Tommie Cheves (Miss Tommie). He had 2 sisters (Mrs. W.H. McKenzie & Mrs E.P. Willingham) & 1 brother (Elijah John Lewis).
On 3/18/1895 Robert saved a Frank Hague (who was 8) from the Beaver Creek Turnpike He had fallen in & was then carried into a sewer pipe. He was regarded as a real hero.
The next day he was accidentially shot by Leo Hertz with a rifle. At first they thought it was serious but not fatal. The condition grew rapidly worse & he died in his sleep. The funeral was held on 3/21/1895. Every store in town was closed & it was a big procession.
His older brother Elijah John Lewis had passed almost 2 years prior & his father was so divistated he ordered from Italy, hand carved marble statues to their likings. They are most unique statues & stand tall in the Felton Cemetery.
