James Curtis Campbell, 72, of Bozeman died Thursday, April 11, 1996, at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital after a long illness.

He was born April 30, 1923, in Roundup, a son to Thomas Oliver and Ouida Cora Curtis Campbell. He graduated from high school in 1941 in Manhattan. He had worked as auto service manager for Montgomery Ward for 20 years, moving to Bozeman from Kalispell in 1958.

He later worked for the Bozeman Deaconess Hospital and retired in 1988. He married Beverly A. Groat in Red Lodge on July 7, 1951, and served in the U. S. Marines from 1943 to 1945. He was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, a life member of the Elks, and the Disabled American Veterans. He was also a member of the Eagles and the American Legion in Manhattan.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly; four daughters, Sheila and her husband, Frank Ruffatto Jr., of Helena, Patricia and her husband, Bill Yates, of Willow Creek, Mary and her husband, Douglas Hamilton, of Three Forks, and Anne and her husband, Todd Jutila, of Belgrade; two sons, Michael Campbell and his wife, Martha, of Dillon, Scott Campbell and his wife, Alicia, of Vancouver, Wash.; one brother, Ernest Campbell and his wife, Effon, of Billings; nine grandchildren and one great-grandson, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.

A virgil will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church and a memorial Mass will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the same church. Private interment of the cremated remains will be at Sunset Hills Cemetery with military honors. Memorials may be made to the Gallatin County Hospice or to the American Cancer Society. Dahl Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
