Herman Heinrich Meiners
Birth: May 3, 1821, Germany
Death: Mar. 3, 1904
Cincinnati
Hamilton County
Ohio, USA

The son and oldest surviving child of Johann Gerhard Meiners and his first wife Maria Elizabeth Heuer Meiners, Herman Heinrich Meiners was born May 3, 1821, the second-born of four children. He also had four younger half-siblings. His stepmother was Elizabeth Dunker Meiners. Herman was a stone mason from Ankum, Germany, who worked on the Suspension Bridge in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. Orphaned at age thirteen, he was apprenticed to a stone mason. He came to America in 1841. Herman worked for six years to raise enough money to bring two of his siblings, Johann Gerhard "George" Meiners and Maria Gertrude Meiners Teipel (buried in Mother of God Cemetery in Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky), to America.

By all his wives, fifteen children were born. His first wife was Caroline Bergman Meiners, and she (and the baby) died in her first childbirth.

His second wife was Agnes Kramer Meiners, and before her death (and the baby's) during her fifth childbirth, they had four surviving children: Edmund B. Meiners, Herman Meiners, Mary Meiners Burdick, and Henry G. Meiners.

By his third wife, Elizabeth Kreke Meiners, whom he married on May 13, 1869 at Saint Francis Seraph Catholic Church in Cincinnati, he had nine children: George Gerard Meiners, Rose Elizabeth Meiners Helmers, John H. Meiners, William G. Meiners, Agnes Meiners Schninner, Bernhard F. Meiners, Joseph Peter Meiners, Leo Meiners, and Gertrude Meiners Uhl.

Herman is shown in the 1850 census as worth $3,000. He was a member of the German Pioneers of Cincinnati. He died at age 82 on March 3, 1904 in Cincinnati and is buried among his three wives at Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Cincinnati. Family tradition has it that both Caroline and Agnes picked out their successor before dying. Apparently each told Hermann whom he should marry next, and he obliged. His obituary appeared in the Cincinnati Freie Presse.
