La Prairie Man Summoned Aged Resident of Adams County Dies Suddenly at His Home Monday Evening from Apoplexy
Andrew Jackson Walker, aged 89 years, and one of the oldest residents of this section of the country, died at 5 o'clock Monday evening at his home in LaPrairie from a stroke of apoplexy. He had been in failing health for some time but was working in his garden a short time before his death.
Mr. Walker was born in Virginia and came to Illinois when 19 years of age, having resided continually in Adams county with the exception of a short time when he was employed in Keokuk, Ia. He was a member of the 39th Illinois volunteers and served four years in the civil war. He had been a resident of LaPrairie for the past 40 years.
Mr. Walker was married to Miss Katherine Ferree of Pennsylvania in November, 1853, and to them were born six children, one of whom died in infancy. Those surviving are: Charles A. Walker of Galesburg, Mrs. Jennie E. McKeowan of LaPrairie, Mrs. Mary Robbins of Montana, Dr. Joel F. Walker of Missouri, and George K. Walker of St. Louis. The deceased's first wife died November 24, 1890, and he was later married to Mrs. Mary Moore in Mt. Sterling.
He had been a member of the Methodist church for many years and was a regular attendant until his health began to fail.
The funeral will be held from the church Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock with burial in the Pulaski cemetery.
