OBITUARY; (Published in Borger, Texas by Daily Herald, June 15, 1943)
Mrs. J.P. Garland of Dumas, Texas received word that 19-year-old S/Sgt. Dean Garland of Phillips, Texas was killed in an airplane accident Saturday near Conova, South Dakota.
Dean enlisted in the Army Air Forces in June, 1942. He received his basic training at Sheppard Field, Texas, where he graduated as an airplane mechanic. From there he went to Maryland and then to Florida. In January, 1943, he graduated as an aerial gunner and was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant and presented a pair of wings. Since January he has been stationed at MacDill Field, Tampa, Florida, where he has undergone advanced training with a combat unit. He recently completed that training and was awaiting assignment overseas.
Dean graduated from Phillips High school in 1942 in Phillips, Texas.
No arrangements have been made other than that the body is being sent to Pampa Funeral Home pending arrangements.

Word was received today that the body of S/Sgt. Dean Garland, son of Mrs. J.P. Garland of Dodge City, Kans., will arrive in Pampa tomorrow at 11:55 a.m.
Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Pampa Saturday afternoon at 2:30. The burial will be at Amarillo immediately after the funeral service.

Garland, who was killed in an airplane accident Saturday near Conova, South Dakota, graduated from Phillips High school in 1942. The mother resided in Dumas until shortly before the death of her son.
