|Birth: ||Mar. 2, 1853, England|

Wm. Henry Bennetts Age 29 Years And 3 Months
Died in an Attempt To rescue his fellow Miners in the ALLA DRIFT Mine near Gold Hill Nevada During a Great Fire at that Mine On June 2nd 1882
Miner Denis Callaham also died in the same attempt.
A Marble stone was erected in his Honor by his Comrades at the mine and now stands in the Gold Hill Cemetery.
Well it used to stand but some low life Dastards knocked over the stone and it took 3 of us just to get it somewhat set up right. It is hoped by the writer that Williams Ghost haunts the dreams of the dastards who get a sick pleasure knocking over grave stones.
The Photo of his vandalised grave was taken in 2001
He was Born in Northern England But Died an American.

Sacramento Daily Record-Union, June 6, 1882 (Tuesday), Page 3, Column 4"NEVADA.Funeral of the Heroic Miners.Virginia [City] (Nev.), June 5th. — The funeral of Denis Callahan and Wm. Bennett, the miners who forfeited their lives in an attempt to penetrate the flooded drift of the Alta mine, took place yesterday [June 4]. An opportunity to attend the funeral was afforded to nearly all the miners on the lode. The body of Callahan was conveyed from Virginia to the Gold Hill depot, accompanied by 1,00 miners, the Masonic fraternity, the Land League, and citizens in carriages and on foot. Every available vehicle was pressed into service. After depositing the body in the Miners' Union Hall, the procession moved to the Masonic Hall of Gold Hill, and from there conveyed the body of Bennett to the Gold Hill Cemetery. These funerals were the largest the death of any miner has ever caused on the Comstock, every person familiar with the efforts of the two unfortunate men deeming it his duty to attest bis admiration of their heroism. The floral tributes were many and handsome." END
