He was the grandson of Humphrey Cunningham and Rhoda Simril. His father died when he was only two years of age. His mother moved the family first to Bedford Co., TN where relatives were living and purchased land. She sold the land in 1820 and moved her family to Lawrence County, AL. Moses married Nancy Caroline Russell in 1852 in Lawrence Co., AL. They were the parents of four known children; Dr. Russell McWhorter Cunningham, James Benjamin Cunningham, Lucy Eva Cunningham Roberson and Mary Caroline Cunningham. Their son Russell McWhorter Cunningham was the Governor of Alabama as well as a noted Physician.
