(From the Myrtle Beach Sun-News)

An 11-year-old boy from North Myrtle Beach died Friday after being accidentally shot by a friend, according city spokeswoman Nicole Aiello.

Matthew Bellamy died from a single gunshot wound to the abdomen, said Tamara Willard, Horry County deputy coroner.

City police are investigating the shooting, which involved the boy and his friend, who is between the ages of 12 and 14 years old, Aiello said. She said the shooting occurred at the home of the boy who fired the shot, and that his mother was home at the time.

When first responders were called to the Palmwood Estates community at 829 9th Ave. S. at 4:22 p.m., they found Bellamy with a single gunshot wound to his abdomen, she said.

Authorities reported that the shooter picked up a .22-caliber semi-automatic rifle that was lying on a bed in the home and it went off, shooting Bellamy, Aiello said. He stood within three feet of the shooter.

Bellamy was transported to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center after being shot and was declared dead at 5:04 p.m., Willard said.

Police consider the shooting accidental and no one has been arrested or charged in connection with the incident.
