Pendleton-Clarice Parr Sandoz, 89, of Pendleton, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at her home.
Recitation of the Rosary will be held in the chapel at burns Mortuary of Pendleton on Monday at 7 p.m. Disposition was by cremation with inturnment to be at Olney Cemetery.
Mrs. Sandoz was born Dec. 4, 1909, at Pendleton, to Fred H. and Margaret E. Rainville Parr. She was a mem ber of the Walla Walla tribe. She grew up in the area and attended Adams High School before completing school at Chemawa Indian school near Salem.
On Aug. 3, 1946, she married Lester Sandoz at Walla Walla. They moved to Tacoma, Wash., where her husband was employed by Western Farmers Company, later moving to Portland where he continued with Western Farmers until his retirement in 1973.
After retirement they returned to Mission where she became a busy volunteer leader on the reservation. She was a cook at the reservations's senior center, which she helped establish. She was a member of the Golden Age Council when the group founded the bingo operation, generating funds for the entire tribe.
She served as a full-time community health representative for Indian Health Services for three years, typically transporting patients to medical appointments in Walla Walla and occasionally to Portland.
In 1990 she was recipient of the Women of Achievement Award from the Oregon Commission for Women and received one of five Outstanding Service Awards from the National Indian Council on Aging.
Mrs. Sandoz was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary.
She enjoyed baking break and "fancy-work" crocheting, particularly afghans.
Survivors include a sister, Hazel P. Kramer of Pendleton and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester, in 1997, by brothers, John Parr, Ted Parr, Lawrence Parr, and Wallace Parr, and a sister, Theda Parr Abbott.
