Ira Temple
Birth: SEPTEMBER 22, 1818 in Woodford, Bennington Co, VT
Death: JUNE 10, 1864 in Andersonville Prison, Macon Co, GA
Father: William Temple
Mother: Cynthia Field

Ira Temple's POW records indicate that he was sent to a prison in Richmond, Virginia. December 12, 1863, he was transferred to prison in Danville, Virginia. Shortly thereafter he seems to have been hospitalized for chronic rheumatism and was in and out of the hospital several times. Eventually, Ira Temple was sent to the infamous prison in Andersonville, Georgia and was hospitalized again on May 23, 1864. He died there on either June 1 or June 10, 1864 - (the records give both dates)- of diarrhea.

Ira's younger brother William E. Temple, who served in the same company with Ira, was severely wounded at Chickamauga when Ira was captured. Their 16 year old nephew, James T. Douglass, the son of their sister Sarah, also served alongside them in Company H of the 100 Illinois, and also fought at Chickamauga.

A commemorative stone in the family cemetery plot in Wilton Ilinois is inscribed: "To a fallen patriot, Ira Temple, of Co. H 100 Regt. Ill. Voll., died and buried at Andersonville Prison, June 10, 1864, aged 45 years, 8 mo. 20 d., taken prisoner at the Battle of Chicamauga, Ga."
