John "Hans" Sonnaband was born in Holstein, Germany. The family came to this country in 1852 on the vessel "Armida" and settled in Calumet County, Wisconsin.
John went to Michigan to work in the lumber industry, and enlisted in the Michigan Volunteer Infantry. He was injured the received a medical discharge in
June 1965.
In July 1867 he was married to Anna Lorenzen. They had two daughters that were born in Wisconsin and they went to Nebraska about 1870 on a homestead act, where Anna died and John brought the little girls back to
Wisconsin to be raised by their grandmother. He was remarried to Sylvia Coty and they had four children.
After she died he married Mary E. Brown.

He was discharged on 6/30/1865 at Louisville, KY
