Margaret C. Ankers, 82, of West Chester, known as Peggy to her family and friends, died April 9, 2010, at the Neighborhood Hospice of West Chester, surrounded by her children.
She was born Margaret Mary Collins in Philadelphia in 1927, the daughter of William Joseph Collins and Marie Leahy Collins.
She was raised in Philadelphia and Miami Beach, and in 1945 graduated from Little Flower Catholic High School for Girls in Philadelphia. Upon graduation, she was selected as the recipient of the prestigious American Legion Scholarship, which enabled her to earn a bachelor of science degree in journalism from Temple University in 1949.
After graduating from Temple, she worked at the Weed advertising agency in Philadelphia, and also worked in advertising and as a reporter in DeSoto, Mo., before moving to New York City, where she worked for television and radio advertising rep firms, and eventually at The New York Times. She also worked at the Stable Gallery when it was a center of the Pop Art movement and the site of Andy Warhol's first solo Pop Art show in New York.
In 1961, she married Robert Ankers, and they had five children in the 1960s. They lived briefly in Hanover, N.H., before moving to West Chester in 1970.
She was an active member of St. Agnes Parish in West Chester, and volunteered at the Chester County Historical Society and with the West Chester Area School District. She also did fundraising for multiple sclerosis and UNICEF, and enjoyed helping with pledge drive phone banks for public radio and television stations. An avid reader and lifelong learner, she continued her education into her late 70s, taking many courses in a wide range of subjects at West Chester University. She was also an active member of the Local Emergency Preparedness Committee in Chester County.
Throughout her life she was interested in local history and culture wherever she lived, and took advantage of the many cultural opportunities in New York, Philadelphia, and West Chester, and particularly those at West Chester University, which was within walking distance from her home.
She is survived by her brother, Robert Collins, of Bethesda, Md.; and four children, Col. (Dr.) Kathleen Ankers, USAF, of O'Fallon, Ill., Anne Marie Ankers of Los Angeles, Calif., David Ankers of Philadelphia, and Master Sgt. (Ret.) James Ankers, USAF, of King of Prussia.
Her son, Andrew Ankers, predeceased her in 1986.
She is also survived by three grandchildren and by her former husband, Robert, with whom she remained friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to her Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 14, at St. Agnes Church, West Chester.
