Born in New York City, John Thomas Carroll attended local schools and was enrolled at St. John's University when World War II broke out. He enlisted in the Army and after the war returned to St. John's where he completed his undergraduate degree and then entered the Paulist Fathers.
After ordination John was first assigned to Baltimore (his role not listed) and then moved on to St. Paul the Apostle parish in New York as a curate from 1960-63. While there he completed an MA in English from NYU and in 1963 he returned to the Juniorate to teach English & Composition.
In 1968 Fr Carroll was transferred to St. Paul the Apostle in Los Angeles where he remained the rest of his life. Resisting transfers to other parishes in the late 1970's and early 1980's he was highly engaged in ministry to the middle-aged and elderly and was reluctant to leave them.
Fr. Carroll was beloved for his funeral ministry to many families in their time of grief. In the last years of his life he suffered a series of heart attacks. He is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, CA.

He was a master at small group liturgy, in which the joys of baptisms and birthdays, anniversaries and marriages, graduations and thanksgivings, were filled with added meaning as Father John connected each little circle of family and friends with the hidden treasure of divine love and life their God has buried in these high points of human life."
