Clarence L. Baldwin was born August 5, 1847, in Martinsburg, Lewis County, New York, the son of Samuel S. and Mary Elizabeth Fairchild Baldwin. He moved with his family to Illinois in 1856. He attended schools in the village of Sadorus. He lived at home and assisted his father in the farm work until of age, and then rented land of his father and engaged in farming for himself.

In December 1869, he married Mary Rawlings. Clarence and Mary were the parents of eight children. Clarence died January 13, 1914. His funeral was held January 16, 1914, from the Baptist Church. The Masonic Order of which he was a member participated in the funeral. Burial was in the Sadorus Cemetery.
