AMHERST — James Rea, 86 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Friday, April 9, 2010 at Kingston of Vermilion Nursing Home following a brief illness.

He was born July 10, 1923 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. James lived most of his life in Amherst and made his home in Lorain for the last year.

James served as a Military Police Officer in the United States Army. He was employed in the shipping department at USS Kobe Steel in Lorain for fifteen years before retiring in 1990. He was previously employed at RC Cola in Elyria and the Lorain County Community Based Correctional Facility. James was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst. He was a thirty-eight year member and five term president for the Amherst Lions Club. He was instrumental in forming the Amherst High School Leo Club. James enjoyed bowling.

Survivors include his daughters and their husbands Lori and Elvis Elswick of Lorain, Jaclyn and Sandy Jones of Dickinson, Texas; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; his brothers Michael Rae and his wife Marilyn of McKeesport, Pennsylvania, Marley Rea of Georgia and Robert Rae of McKeesport, Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by his wife of thirty-eight years Marlene "Sally" Mae Rea (nee: McKinney) on May 16, 2002; his brothers William Rae, Jr., Paul Rae and Jack Rae; and by his parents William and Madeline Rae (nee: Marley).

Friends may call Monday, April 12, 2010 from 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Closing Prayers will be held on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church; 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst. The Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard will perform Military Honors. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Amherst Lions Club; 7010 Oak Tree Drive North, Lorain, Ohio 44053.
