Francis was an ordained Baptist minister. He served as pastor of the Elmira and Fairport Baptist Church in NY. In the 1850 U.S. Census he is shown living with his wife Fanny and son Spratt in Reading, Steuben County, New York (listed under 'Francis Donalson' sic.) Francis died in 1857 while travelling in Ireland. He was first buried in Ireland. Twenty years later in 1877 his remains were returned to Michigan and he was reburied in Barry County. After Francis's death his widow remarried to William Hamilton Brown.
In the 1830's Francis's parents, uncles, and cousins changed the family name from 'Danielson' to 'Donaldson,' believing that 'Donaldson' was the original family surname back in 1600's Scotland.
