Peter was a son of Anna Gerrity and Martin Haggerty. On July 7, 1890, he was baptized by Rev. E. S. Phillips at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plains, and John and Ellen Laydon were his Sponsors. He was employed by the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad for 47 years, first as a fireman then later as a locomotive engineer. He retired in June 1959.
On February 19, 1917, he married Valley Thompson in Binghamton, Broome County, New York. The couple raised five children: James, Peter Jr., Thompson, Marian, and Joseph.
