Wm. Alexander Ward was the son of David Ward & Nancy Turk (Mitchell) Ward of Missouri. His brother was Nathaniel Mitchell Ward of Oregon. Wm. Alexander Ward married Margaret R. Masterson on March 5, 1835 in Lexington, Fayette County, Missouri. On August 20, 1854, the Wards had eight of their children with them. Only two sons survived when the family's wagon train was attacked by Indians.

Notes from Donald H. Shannon:

The Wards had another son, Thomas C. Ward (b. 1848-9) who apparently died before 1854. Also, Mrs Ward was pregnant and soon to deliver another child when the Indian attack occured.
