Missionary.
Henry Spalding was born into this world in very disadvantaged circumstances. He was given to strangers, a Mr and Mrs Andrew Broat Jr., by his young unwed mother when Henry was but 14 months of age. Henry was given no special advantages growing up and had no schooling. When Henry was 21 he studied grammar and learned to read and write. When Henry became a Christian he joined the Presbyterian Church in 1826. He became so well educated that he became a teacher for a time. In 1828 Henry devoted his life to becoming a missionary. He graduated from Western Reserve College in Ohio in 1833. Henry married Eliza Hart Oct 12, 1833. In 1835 he was ordained by the Presbyterian Church and chosen to be sent as a Missionary to the Osage Indians. While the Spalding's were on their way to the Osage Indians, Henry was contacted by Marcus Whitman. Marcus was searching diligently for another couple to accompany he and his wife to the Northwest to be missionaries to the Indians of that area. After praying about it Henry agreed that it would be the right thing to do and joined the Whitman's in that endeavor. The Spalding's and Whitman's set out for the Oregon Territory in 1836. The Whitman's set up their mission in what is now Walla Walla, WA. The Spalding's set up their mission near what is now Lapwai, ID. The Whitman massacre occurred in 1847. The Spalding's were forced to leave their mission in ID and go to what is now Brownsville, OR where it would be safer. Henry's wife died of illness in 1851 and he then remarried in 1853. In 1862 he was finally allowed to return to the mission he started in Lapwai, ID among the Nez Perce Indians. He ministered there until his death in 1874. Henry is credited with great success in his ministry to the Nez Perce Indians. He also planted the first apple trees in ID. The first Presbyterian Church on the west coast was organized in 1838 with Henry Spalding as Pastor.
