Fus Burgess died of a gunshot wound sustained in a firefight during a foot patrol southeast of Showal in Nad-e Ali District, central Helmand.
Aged 20, he grew up in Townhill, Swansea. After he left school, he studied catering and worked in a restaurant. He completed infantry training and joined the Cyprus-based battalion in May 2008. He participated in a demanding overseas training exercise in Kenya and deployed on his first operational tour in late 2009 as a machine gunner. Comrades described Jon as a tough, dependable soldier and excellent friend.
Fus Burgess leaves behind his fiancée Kelly Forrest and their unborn daughter Abigail, father Royston, mother Susan, sisters Tracy and Suzanne, brothers David, Christopher and Ashley, grandmother Pamela, along with other relatives and friends. The family issued a statement, "Jonathan was a loving and caring man who enjoyed life to full. He had an infectious smile that would brighten up anyone's day. We were all very lucky to have had such a wonderful person in our lives. He was a much loved son, brother, friend and fiancé and would have been an amazing father to his baby girl. He will be greatly missed by us all. He will always be our hero."
Funeral with full military honours was held on April 28, 2010 at the Cathedral Church of
St Joseph in Swansea.
