He was born May 2, 1931 in Grand Valley, Ontario, Canada, to Joseph and Carolyn (Greer) Smeltzer. Joseph served in the United States Air Force. He worked as an Air Traffic Controller for the FAA in Oberlin, OH for 27 years. He retired in 1984.
He is survived by children, Dawn (Kenny) Pawelczyk, Kimberly J. Payne, and Brian Mauritz, stepchildren, William (Karen) Kantor, Kathryn (John) Falke, and Tom (Maxine) Kantor, 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and sister, Helen (William) Kight.
