Joshua was the son of Timothy & Millicent (Dodson) Stamps. His siblings were: Diadima Sarah, Nathaniel, Lucinda, Charles Lee, William W., Elijah Dodson, James (there is some question if he was the child of Timothy and Milla Stamps. If so, he must have died before 1827 as he is not named in the will of his brother, William W. Stamps).
Joshua married Elizabeth Petty in Madison Co, AL on October 16, 1827. Elizabeth was born about 1810/11 in Caswell Co, NC.
On May 9, 1828, he was named in his brother, William's, will. That part of the will pertaining to him follows:
"I will to Brother Joshua W. Stamps, the following property viz/ four Negroes, Jack, Amy, Jim and Hamet with the above excepted bed and bureau."

They lived in Madison Co, AL until about 1834 when Joshua purchased 160 acres in Hines Co, MS. By 1840 they were living in DeSota Co, MS where Joshua was a minister and preached at Center Hill Baptist Church. In 1841 he established the Coldwater Baptist Church in Barton, Marshall Co, MS.
The Federal Census record taken on Sept. 20, 1850, indicates that Joseph, age 48 (farmer) & Elizabeth, age 39, lived in the Northern Division, DeSoto Co, MS. Children who were still at home were: Caroline E. (19), Wm. W. (16), George W. (15), Phillippi (14), Jerome B. (11), Mary D., (9), Joseph L. (7), & Rufus P. (3).
About 1857 they moved to White Co, AR where he bought a home from Levi Ricker, a German. It was said the house, built in 1832, was used as a stage stop on the route between MO and Little Rock, AR. Joshua's land lay in the middle of the Southwest Trail to the Republic of Texas, for which President Jackson appropriated $16,000 to clear from St. Louis to the Texas border.
