US Congressman from Michigan. Elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-Eighth and Twenty-Ninth Congresses, he served from 1843 to 1847. Hunt was born in Demerara, British Guiana, the son of a colonist. From age four he was raised in New York City, where he was admitted to the bat in 1824 and was a practicing attorney for a dozen years. In 1836 he moved to Pontiac, Michigan and immediately assumed a prominent place in local affairs, being appointed judge of the Probate Court (1836), Commissioner of Internal Improvement (1837), and Prosecuting Attorney for Oakland County (1841 to 1843). Hunt was the first person to represent Michigan's newly created 3rd Congressional District in the US House of Representatives. He did not seek reelection in 1846, and following a brief return to Michigan he settled in Washington DC to practice law privately. He died there two days after his 58th birthday. Originally buried at Congressional Cemetery, Hunt was later reinterred at Oak Hill Cemetery in Pontiac. (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
